Nial’s Story

Meet Nial

Nial is an 11 year boy who loves Gymnastics. He tragically lost his mum in June 2025 in sudden and heartbreaking circumstances. Since her passing, loss and grief remain a daily reality for Nial and his family, and her absence is deeply felt by them all.

During this incredibly difficult period, gymnastics has been a vital focus and emotional outlet for Nial. It has provided structure, distraction, motivation and a sense of normality at a time when his world has been turned upside down. The support shown by Wythall Gymnastics Club, where Nial trains, has been outstanding and has played a key role in helping him continue to engage with something he loves.

Recognising both Nial’s circumstances and his passion for gymnastics, we invited Nial and his best friend Theo to spend an afternoon with the Senior Men’s Artistic Gymnastics team in King’s Gym, through our Inspirational Experiences Programme.

The boys had a guided tour of Lilleshall National Sports Centre, including the Trampoline Training Hall, where they bounced on Olympic-sized trampolines. Then to the main gym, where Nial was welcomed by members of the Senior MAG team, including Jake Jarman, Harry Hepworth and Luke Whitehouse, alongside other senior gymnasts.

They were also warmly welcomed by National MAG Head Coach Barry Collie, whose encouragement set the tone for the afternoon. The session began with warm-up games, where Nial and Theo were immediately made to feel part of the team. The boys then moved on to try some of the apparatus, receiving one-to-one coaching from highly respected coaches Andrei Popov, Tom Rawlinson and, of course, Barry Collie.

“Absolutely loved the experience”…

We spoke to Nial’s dad, Chris, the following day, who said: “Nial and Theo absolutely loved the experience on Wednesday, so thank you so much.” And Nial added: “Dad, this experience literally made my life.”
